HISTORY,
MYTHOLOGY, RELIGION
"This we know: the
earth does not belong to Man, Man belongs to the earth. All
things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did
not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever
he does to the web, he does to himself. "
(Attributed --
falsely -- to Chief Seattle)
"Ye are all the
flowers of one garden; the leaves of one tree; the drops of one
ocean."
(From the Bah'ai
Faith)
"We have no
ideology. We have no theology. We dance."
(Spoken by a Shinto
priest in response to a question from a Christian theologian)
RELIGION, MYTHOLOGY, AND PHILOSOPHY
- The Joseph Campbell
Foundation.
- A virtual exhibit of the Dead
Sea Scrolls
- The recently-discovered Cave
Paintings of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, Ardèche, France.
- David Wiley's wonderful collection of Religious and
Sacred Texts, from A to Z (Apocrypha to Zoroaster,
that is). A must-visit for anyone having trouble locating
original texts from a variety of religions and
mythologies.
- A useful virtual library also exists at the home page of
the Societas
Gnostica Noregia, a Norway-based organization. They
feature a large library of Christian, Pagan, Jewish, and
Oriental literature related to the experience of Gnosis.
This includes much of the Nag Hammadi scripts, the
writings of Plato, medieval writings on alchemy and the
Kabbala, and much of the Hindu Upanishads.
- The WWW Virtual Library reference to Religions
- Bhagavad-gita,
the great text of the Hindus, as transcribed and
explained by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada.
- The Gnosis
Archive. Includes a discussion of the possible origin
of the Thomas Gospel by yours truely, taken from a
posting last year (unknown by me until recently) from
alt.religion.gnostic.
- The Internet Confession
Booth, featuring a Digital Priest (unordained,
most likely).
- Mythopoeia, an
Interactive Art Book on mythological themes. Although it
more rightly belongs under a Performance Art
category, I don't have that category on my homepage, so I
include it here.
- The Bible
Gateway. A text-searchable utility for finding Old,
New Testament, and Apocrypha passages.
- The Ecole
Initiative is described as a "Hypertext
Encyclopedia of Early Church History on the World-Wide
Web." It features an excellent chronology
of early Judeo/Christian/Islamic history.
- Guide
to Early Church Documents. Notes and texts of
documents written in the early days of Christianity.
Especially check out the section on the Apostles' Creed,
and the politics behind its development.
- Native
American Astronomy. An excellent overview of native
american views of constellations and star theology.
- Faces
of the Gods. A review of African altars by Robert
Farris Thompson, professor of Afro-American Art at Yale
University and curator of The Museum of African Art in
New York City.
- Hindunet is an
excellent resource for all things Dharma, including a
discussion of various Hindu philosophies
and sects, and a description of the pantheon of gods.
- The
Theosophical Society is a group dedicated to the
exploration and teaching of theosophy, the principle that
all -- from the subatomic through "living
beings" to stars and galaxies -- are one living,
evolving organism.
- BuddhaNet:
a wonderful on-line resource on the Buddhist philosophy
and history (and a pretty cool HTML hack, at that).
Bodhisattva, won't you take me by the hand?
- A resource
guide for Comparative Religion.
- Myth and
Legend from Ancient Times to the Space Age. A short
comparison of myths from Unicorns to UFOs.
- An Urban Legends
page, with a searchable database of well-known urban
legends.
HISTORY
Does anyone know of other good mythology pages relating to
general areas of mythology (as opposed to specific cultures, like
Greece or Egypt)? If you know of one, e-mail me, please.
